RANGITOTO

Rangitoto is an iconic volcanic island sitting in the middle of the Hauraki Gulf, its spreading form looking similar from many different vantage points around Auckland. Rangitoto has a unique landscape, having erupted from the sea only 700 or so years ago. This is an island of volcanic scoria, with plant life slowly colonising the rock. It is fascinating to see how plants establish in this apparently barren landscape, the pohutukawa being predominant, along with Griselinia lucida, kowhai, ferns and lichen.

I visited Rangitoto twice late last year - in September we were landed at Islington Bay on a damp misty day and walked over to Boulder Bay. Then I returned on a sunny day in October, when we walked to McKenzie Bay then up to the summit, before returning to Rangitoto Wharf.

There are 3 historic bach settlements on the island, built in the 1920's and 1930's, which are now being preserved.
