Tony, a somewhat unconventional architect and former lecturer in architecture and planning at Auckland University, built his own home at Karaka Bay in Auckland's Glendowie, and it is this experience that he writes about in this series of articles. Reading Tony's book will certainly get you questioning why we build the way we do, and to wondering why Councils set some of their regulations!  SANCTUARY: GARDENING FOR THE SOUL Lauri Brunton and Erin Fournier This book was published by Friedman/Fairfax: New York in 1999. To quote from the book: For many of us, it is in the solitude and safety of a garden that we experience the deepest sense of peace. I couldn't agree more! 'Sanctuary' is broken down into chapters based on particular characteristics of sanctuary gardens: peace, change, passion, mystery and contemplation. The writers give some key questions to help readers determine what their personal sanctuary gardens might look like: · What is your ideal sanctuary? · Where do you feel most protected? · How did the places of your childhood console and inspire you? · What pleasing scents, colours, and shapes can you recall? Perhaps this will get you started in thinking about your ideal sanctuary.
