Central Otago is a unique landscape, hot and dry in the summer and freezing cold in the winter, the closest New Zealand gets to a continental climate. Blue Lake, St Bathans, Central Otago OTAGO RAIL TRAIL In 2007, I joined 3 friends to cycle the full length of the Otago Rail Trail - a fantastic experience I can recommend to anyone. I returned the following year with my family, when we spent half a day on the rail trail and took some time out to explore further afield. Evening at Omakau, on the Central Otago Rail Trail This area has had some of the highest as well as some of the lowest temperatures ever recorded in New Zealand. We arrived in a nor'wester with a temperature of 35C.
