NORTHLAND TUTUKAKA COAST In July 2011 I
attended the Landscaping New Zealand annual conference held on the beautiful
Tutukaka Coast. This coastline has been voted amongst the ten best in the
world. Whale Bay on the
Tutukaka Coast - accessible only on foot or by boat The highlight of the
weekend was the day trip to the Poor Knights Islands on board the Perfect
Day, even though it was too rough to snorkel (a first in the captain's six
years with Dive Tutukaka!). The Poor Knights Islands lie only 23km off the
coast of Northland, but enjoy a unique climate due to warm currents swept
south from the Coral Sea. Consequently, they are blessed with a range of
unique and rare plants, animals and fish, including the magnificent Poor
Knights lily, masses of which can be seen clinging precariously to the
cliffs. Magnificent scenery at
the Poor Knights Islands These islands are protected
by Marine and Nature Reserve status, so no-one is allowed to land. They have
a wonderful limestone structure, including the world's largest sea cave
(which we motored into) and several sea tunnels far superior to the Bay of
Island's Hole in the Rock! WHANGAREI HEADS Whangarei Heads is a
bit off the beaten track, which is part of its charm. The geology is
fantastic, with magnificent craggy volcanic spires. I climbed Mt Aubrey the
first time I was there, and Mt Manaia, the tallest peak, in July 2011. Whangarei Heads from Mt Aubrey View of Marsden Point from the top of Mt
