GARDEN DESIGN PHILOSOPHY OF LAURENSON LANDSCAPE DESIGN

A garden where one may enter in and forget the whole world cannot be made in a week, nor a month, nor a year; it must be planned for, waited for and loved into being.

 Chinese proverb

SANCTUARY

We believe a garden should be a sanctuary – a place of comfort, protection and hope - where you can relax, dream, and renew your energy.  A garden should also be a personal space, where you can be reminded of people, places and events from your past.

A peaceful sanctuary is truly a little paradise on this earth, the greatest refreshment that nature can offer humanity.

Lauri Brunton and Erin Fournier, Sanctuary: Gardening for the Soul

Everyone’s idea of a sanctuary is unique, based on culture, personal experience, preference and timing. However, there are a number of elements commonly found in sanctuaries: water, a symbolic mountain, trees, a representative island, a meadow, a threshold, a sense of enclosure, a symbolic cave, and a path. These elements often evoke strong emotional responses in the individual. It is the use and combination of the elements that defines a sanctuary for an individual.

SUSTAINABLE STYLE IN GARDEN DESIGN

A garden should also be environmentally sustainable. We design gardens with minimal impact on their surroundings, gardens that improve the local ecosystem and encourage the return of wildlife.

In particular, we need to improve the way we manage our stormwater, which is putting a huge strain on our city's infrastructure. We can do this by including roof and rain gardens in our designs. These gardens reduce the flow of stormwater, the plants absorbing some of the water and filtering pollutants before it reaches our stormwater drains and waterways.

Roof and rain gardens need not be boring – they can be as stylish as any other garden.
